Introduction to ministry in Lutheran education

Introduction to ministry in Lutheran education is a workshop for ministry staff who have commenced their employment in Lutheran education. To be completed in the first two years of employment, it was developed for new ministry staff who have roles and responsibilities in areas such as in ministry, chaplaincy, worship, devotions, pastoral care, wellbeing and counselling.

The three-day professional learning workshop is available either annually or biennially in one Australian location and as recommended by Regional Office Formation Leaders. The workshop is facilitated by Regional Office Formation Leaders and experienced school ministry staff.

Why is this workshop needed?

Ministry staff have a critical role in the mission and ministry of Lutheran education. To support ministry staff in their knowledge and understandings of Lutheran theology for their roles and so that they may serve more effectively, an LCA Accreditation for ministry (Am) pathway has been developed.

Testimonials

What worked well for you in this workshop?

  • It assisted me to get a deeper understanding in my journey of Lutheran education in so many different relevant topics.
  • Group discussions are always some of the richest learning experiences. That and having time to reflect and consolidate.
  • Loved having people from interstate and also that not everyone is from a Lutheran background.
  • The content of the sessions was logical and progressed to a sense of completion, covering the main bases and ensuring chaplains went home with a picture of Lutheran schools. Three days were really well planned and executed.

Key takeaways from workshop participants included:

  • Being more aware of how our Lutheran and Christian ethos sits in with all that we do. That it influences, informs and guides all that we do, but that it is not necessarily the primary reason we are there…
  • That we need, especially as chaplains, to be mindful about sharing our beliefs in a way that is invitational to the students rather than purely instructional.
  • I just feel affirmed in what we are all doing. That gives me energy.
  • A greater understanding of the different types of documents that are applicable in the Lutheran school context … Growing Deep, Christian education … I can question or look into more and understand how our community is operating in them …
